Portugal, southwest of Europe, with its coastline facing the Atlantic, was the most central geography in the world and therefore conducive to navigation.
The country turned to the sea and embarked on Maritime Expansion.
For more than 500 years, Portuguese Technology consolidated and perfected instruments such as nautical charts, travel itineraries, sea needle (compass), ships and caravels.
The caravel, a boat with a greater draft than the barge. It had two masts and triangular sails (Latin cloths). It was fast and, what is more important, it sailed on the haul. Tecnologia Portuguesa discovered and developed the first vessel suitable for ocean exploration. Portuguese navigators began to guide themselves by the stars (Sun and other stars) – inventing astronomical navigation, with the improvement of instruments such as the Astrolabe and the Quadrant; moreover, they turned Jacob's Staff into the Crossbow.
These precision instruments allowed, for the first time in human history, the determination of an exact location, through rigorous mathematical calculations. Rigorous measurements of distances, notes of coastal features and other information were transmitted by sailors to cartographers, who drew ever more accurate maps. The Portuguese improved instrumentation and cartography all over the world.
Combining innovative vessels and navigation instruments, the courage and daring of Portuguese navigators served the purpose of making new worlds known to the world.
The Age of Discovery constitutes the passage from one world to another, from Europe to the whole Earth. Portugal was the pioneer of globalization.
It is the time when traditional schemes are outdated, when it is recognized that it is necessary to pay attention to observation; it is still the time where many myths fade. Scientific discoveries determined a radical change in the conception of the Earth and the Universe. The Portuguese Discoveries were the main causes and consequences of the Renaissance, given Man's growing desire to discover the world and to proclaim his knowledge.
Men like Gil Eanes crossed Cape Bojador for the first time, Bartolomeu Dias the Cape of Good Hope, Vasco da Gama for the first time discovered the sea route to the Indies or Pedro Álvares Cabral who discovered the American continent, opening the way for Christopher Columbus, they are the daring protagonists of the great maritime discoveries that demanded new methods of scientific investigation, based on direct observation and experimentation.
It is Portugal that leads the advances in technology, builds innovative vessels and perfects instruments that support man's will to dominate nature and the world.
Portugal is the most important country in the development of Europe, being of paramount importance its contributions to the scientific development of humanity, namely in botany / medicine, astronomy; cartography; math; geography and anthropology.
Over the centuries, other Portuguese such as Serpa Pinto or Hermenegildo Capelo, Gago Coutinho continued the genuinely Portuguese DNA of innovation, audacity and development.
Today, Portugal is one of the countries that most uses and implements new tools and information technologies.
It is at the top of the world ranking for e-government, e-banking and accessibility to the digital world.
Portugal is a renowned manufacturer of software platforms, implemented all over the world, with special emphasis on the Portuguese-speaking world, a market with more than 260 million people.
